Joan Miro
b. 1893, Barcelona, Spain, d. 1983, Palma, Spain
In 1918, as many artists did, Miro came to Paris. His early influences were Fauvism and Cubism. In 1925, he took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition. Miro is often considered the master of the abstract or "automatic" style of Surrealism. His art was very imaginative, often lyrical, and almost playful. Although he lived in Paris, Miro spent summers at his parents' property in Spain, In spite of being abstract, his art was often influenced by the landscapes around him. The writer Ernest Hemingway bought Miro's painting "The Farm" and wrote, "It has in it all you feel about Spain when you are there and all you feel when you are away and cannot go there."
