Jackson Pollock
b. 1912, Cody, Wyoming, USA
d. 1956, Springs, NY, USA
Pollock grew up in the American west and acknowledged that Native American art (especially Navajo sand paintings) were one of the influences on his art. In 1932, he moved to New York City to study art under Thomas Hart Benton.  After WW II, the modern art scene had shifted from Paris to New York City. Pollock was part of a group of artists who created a movement called Abstract Expressionism: "I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them." He is best known for his large "action paintings" where the canvas was laid out on the studio floor and using his entire body in an almost dance-like rhythm, he poured paint in overlapping colors.
