Nicolas de Stael
B. 1914, St. Petersburg, Russia
d. 1955, Antibes, France
Although born in Russia, after the Russian Revolution, the family was forced to emigrate to Poland. In 1922, de Stael went to Brussels, Belgium to live with a Russian family and to study art at Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1941, he moved to Nice, France where he met the artists Robert and Sonia Delauney. Although influenced by Cubism, the Delauneys were interested in non-representational color abstraction. Their influence inspired de Stael's first abstract paintings or "compositions" as he called them. de Stael became quite successful and is best known for his highly abstract landscape paintings using thick impasto.
